It is important to explain that this is not a Hobby grade helicopter it is a toy. And as such it has toy grade performance. Toy helicopters are durable yes, but cheaply construted and unfixable. If your motor burns up you are completely out of luck, your helicopter then becomes an expensive paperweight which you can not fix. If you've gone past the sixty day replacement period your ganna be pretty sad.
The helicopter is to light to fly outside and as such cannot sustain controlled flight for long periods of time. At best out of the 30 or so flights I had with it, I was in 100% controll of it 2 or 3 of those. This was because of two things. A light breeze roughly 3 kph at its highest would make the heli start a left hand spin and confuse the gyroscope sending the heli to the ground, secondly the amount of tail rudder trim neccasary to keep the heli in a stable fight exausted the battery and made useing the tail rudder for turning to the right impossible, turning to the left simply confused the gyro and once again sent the heli to the ground.
The upside is I crashed it three times in the two weeks I owned it before the tail motor burned up and each time it suffered little to no damage. when it did finally die it was fifteen feet off the ground and fell hard without a scratch. Though the tail motor had burned up in midair for no reason.
This is not a helicopter you can take off at one side of a field fly to the other and back again, then land in the same spot. Its more of a get it in the air and try and keep it from smashing into the ground at 20 kph or into other peoples property type of heli. If you are looking to get a more controllable heli this is not the one. (Though that may not be what everyone is looking for and this heli can still be loads of fun)
You really need to do some hardcore reasearch online to find out why. Look up rc terms such as channels (important for a very stable heli!!), fixed pitch, collective pitch, multi rotor, hobby grade, toy grade. That way you can make an informed decision on a heli that suits your flying expectations.
Kudos to Brookstone for trying to get into the market, by offering a heli like this they have gotten me into a hobby that I will continue to enjoy for a long time, but they did so only by provideing a semi functional helicopter that drove me to research why it did not meet my expectations.
This is probably the best toy grade heli on the market and I believe that if their engineers did some research and adjusted the construction of this model it could be a great 3 channel heli for begginers. I.E. belt driven tail rotor, metal flybar rods instead of plastic, programable digital radio controller, solid metal rotor head, advanced gyroscopic stabilization chip, full assortment of replacement parts, and fixing the battery plugs to not have the locking mechanism on them that make you destroy the plug when you try and remove it from the charger! If they made these adjustments it would be such a nice, durable 3 channel 400 series begginer rc heli and great compitition to the hobby grades that dominate the market, but without those things its almost the exact same as well, any other toy heli, just only available at the mall.
I also applaude Brookstone for their return policy that let me take back the heli for a full refund with very little questions asked. If you find that what I have wrote here is what you expieriance also, they will be more than happy to let you return it WITHING 30 DAYS WITH THE RECIEPT AND ALL PACKAGEING for full purchase price. In that sense it may be a good idea to buy it simply to see if I as a reviewer am full of it, because as long as you have those two things brookstone will not let you down on a return and you will not be out anything, you'll simply have gained some expieriance.
I bought this heli when it had just been released, thus there were no helpfull reviews out on the web to steer me in the right direction. I only had the expieriance of a Brookstone clerk that had only ever flown Brookstone RC's. So I am really hopeing more reviews like the one I am currently posting will be posted in the future, more importantly by an avid toy helicopter enthusiast, as I have only owned 3 in the last 2 years.
Because it is very new it may get better over time, unfortunatly there are so far only 4 other reviews on the web except for mine so time will tell how many regular people feel as I do.
Good luck with whatever you purchase Brookston is a great store with lots of and cool electronic merchandise and great customer service. This Heli was just not for me, but that does not mean I won't go back for all their other great products
